Golden Monkey, also known as
panyong wang, is a type of black tea that originated in Fujian and Yunnan provinces in China. Unlike most teas which are made out of the top two leaves and a bud, golden monkey is made out of one leaf and a bud. This tea is picked in the spring,
Although it is a black tea, its leaves have a golden color, hence the name. Golden monkey is considered a highly desireable tea and can be quite expensive. It is higher in caffeine than other similar black teas, due to its higher concentration of tips/buds.
Golden Monkey is distinct from golden needle tea, a black tea made exclusively of buds.
