Black Tea: Golden Monkey
Last Updated: Apr. 7, 2010
Golden Monkey, also known as panyong wang or jin hou, is a type of black tea that originated in Fujian and Yunnan provinces in China. Unlike most teas which are made out of the top two leaves and a bud, golden monkey is made out of one leaf and a bud. This tea is picked in the spring,Although it is a black tea, its leaves have a golden color, hence the name. Golden monkey tends to be more expensive due to its high concentration of tips or leaf buds. It is also tends to have more caffeine than other similar black teas, as the tips are higher in caffeine.
Golden Monkey is distinct from golden needle tea, a black tea made exclusively of buds, and is also distinct from Yunnan gold, a similar tea produced only in Yunnan province and often described as having a peppery quality. Occasionally the term "golden monkey" is also used to refer to a high grade of Keemun that is rich in golden tips and has a similar appearance.
