Yilan(宜蘭) is a county in northeastern Taiwan. The name Yilan comes from Kavalan, which is a language and an indigenous people of Taiwan. Yilan is the only area in northeastern Taiwan that has an extensive flat plain; farther north and south, the mountains extend the whole way to the ocean.

Yilan is a spacious province and is sparsely populated. The population density is less than half that of Taiwan as a whole, in spite of the fact that most of the county is flat.

The climate is mostly hot and very humid. The county, although mostly flat, stretches inland to mountainous regions; tea is grown at moderate to higher elevations inland where the climate is cooler.
